You know it is funny how most adults have no clue that one day they too where young children. To me i am amazed that at times even myself forget that not really too long ago I was just a kid in school. I also seem to forget at times that when I was a kid I thought about a lot of things that really mattered in life. Yet, even though I am able to remember this fact, at times I find it hard to allow myself to think that my own children are smart enough to listen and learn about real issue in life.

If you are a child that is struggling with Bipolar Disorder, or who is experiencing issues due to depression I would like to ask you to realize that you are no alone at all. There are literally thousands, if not millions of young people who feel the way that you do right now. Again pointing out the above statement I would like you to understand that if you are having an issue at home and your parents, or adult in your life do not seem to get it remember that for some reason as we grow older it is easy for us to forget what it is like to be your age. This does not mean we do not care, it only means that we need your help to remember just as much as you need our help to get through the tough times.

My suggestions for you are very simple to understand, however they may require a little extra effort on your part.

#1- Never, and I mean Never hurt yourself. There are so many obvious reason for me to say this, the most important one to me is, Hurting yourself will NOT solve one single thing. In most cases this will only make life a tad more difficult.

#2- Seek the help of someone... If you need help, there is plenty of good help out there for you. I will provide some resources for you below. Your parents, or other adult in your life are really and truly there for you, and if by chance they are not then seek the help of a friend. If you are on a college campus your schools counseling center is there for you usually 24/7

#3- As bad as you feel today, if you seek help honestly, and openly you will be able to feel better. Yes it will take work, but it can happen.

#4- Do not settle for mediocre. If you are not satisfied with the level of help you are getting then seek better. NOTE: In order to be a real judge of quality help you too must be putting forth quality effort. Remember you cannot get any better if you are not participating in your own treatment.

#5- Know that drugs, and alcohol are 100% poison to anyone with a mental illness. It is like shoving grease down your throat when you have a bad heart.

and finally... Understand this...Your true friend will NOT ask you to do anything that is bad for you or wrong. Surround yourself with good people who will help you get better.

I can trace my illness back to around the age of 11, and can honestly sit here and tell you that I do in fact remember what it is like. This is why I feel the need to reach out to young people and help them seek, and find the help they need. Please do not be like me and waste 25 years of your life hiding, or being afraid to ask for help. STEP UP to the plate right now and reach out to those who can help you.

God Bless

Paul
